Lawrence County Wildlife Tip: About Skunks: Biology: Skunks are members of the weasel family. All animals in this family have a scent glad near the anus. For the skunk, its scent glad is the most advanced and well-developed scent glad in this family. The glands store about 15 cc of an oily liquid which is yellowish in color. The fluid is a compound of sulphur, n-butyl mercaptan. The skunk when threated will discharge a jet of this fluid and throw it as far as 4 to 5 meters. It is capable of spraying up to six times in succession.
