Syracuse Wildlife Tip: Rats in the subway
New York City has always been known to have an ongoing rat problem. Rats make up of about 24% of the population in NYC. Whether they're seen in homes or dark alleys to outside restaurants, rats have always been a part of NYC. But one location where rats have made continuous comebacks is the subway. Thankfully, not Subway the sandwich shop- that would've been a terrible story. Still, Syracuse rats on the subway tracks and inside the subway cars should be controlled, especially since they are a constant threat to people due to their diseases. To jolt your memory, we've compiled together almost all the incidents that involve rats and the subway in the past years.

Don't Sleep in the Subway
In January 2011, a video went viral that showed a rat climbing a sleeping man's leg and upwards towards his chest to get cozy. This rat was seen running around the downtown Number 4 subway car before eventually climbing up the poor guy. You'd think an event such as this would only happen once, sadly that's not the case here. In March 2016, another video went viral that revealed a man sleeping on a 7 train in Manhattan being awakened by a Syracuse rat. After waking, the man “screamed and ran into the next car”, told Antony Lin, who shot this viral video to ABC News.

The Internet Sensation: #PizzaRat
Do you know rat dragging video a slice of pizza went viral over the internet in September 2015? Yes that's right! Just within a few hours of being uploaded, the hashtag #PizzaRat blew up on social media.

The Flood Rat
After the viral #PizzaRat, in September 2018, the NYC flood rat became the new talk of the town after a 6-second video was posted by a Reddit user. In this video, the Syracuse rodent is seen huddling against a pillar in the midst of floodwaters trying to stay put. This took place at the downtown 6 train platform. Rats have had quite a few moments in the media, maybe that's why they keep reoccurring in NYC subways.
