Fayetteville Wildlife Tip: Do rats die in the winter?
Rats die all the time, whether it's due to predation, starvation or pest control. In winter they are more prone to these causes, here's why.

Desperation
Food gets a lot scarcer during the winter. Rats, usually quite cautious, will take risks to get to food during these colder months which they wouldn't necessarily take during the summer. Running through the kitchen when there is obvious activity, for example, to get to the pantry where there are tons of food for them to steal. A simple spring loaded trap with a morsel of food is a much bigger temptation during the winter than the summer time. The family cat suddenly finds that there are a lot of meals running around, and acts accordingly.

Pest control
Foods laced with poison are a much bigger temptation as well, it's not often that a free meal gets placed right in the path of a large nest, hungry from days or weeks with no food. Though not all of the Fayetteville rats eat the poison, they die and the others get a free meal as well, spreading the poison. Traps also catch rats, killing them outright or starving them while they are contained in the traps.

Predators
Rats have many natural predators, our household pets among them. A Fayetteville rat running across the snow outside sticks out like a sore thumb, and is an easy target for birds of prey, foxes, wild and domesticated cats, coyotes and other predators.

Other natural causes
Thin ice being crossed can break under the rats' weight, dropping them into cold water where they can get stuck under ice or outright die from the cold. Due to their fast metabolic rates, fat layers are non-existent among Fayetteville rats, necessary for insulation against extreme temperatures. They can also die from exposure to cold weather in snowstorms.
