Baton Rouge Wildlife Tip: Facts about Squirrel Teeth
Squirrels are famous rodents with prominent set of continuously growing front teeth at upper and lower jaws. Here we discuss some facts about unique features of squirrel teeth.
1. Infant Baton Rouge squirrels of 3 months have 3 pairs of milk teeth which are replace by adult teeth.
2. Adult teeth never re-grow if lost accidently.
3. Tree squirrels have 20 teeth altogether.
• 2 upper incisors
• 2 lower incisors
• 16 molar teeth
4. Grey squirrels have 22 teeth with extra 2 pre-molar teeth.
5. Incisor teeth of Baton Rouge squirrels continuously grow. Normally squirrels used to grinding down their incisors to keep them at right length.
6. Squirrel teeth grow about 6 inch per year. Teeth of lower jaw grow more quickly than upper jaw teeth.
7. Back side of incisors is soft while front of incisor teeth are covered with orange or yellow enamel which strengthen the front teeth for cutting and chewing.
8. Sometimes squirrels may have improper alignment of incisors and this condition is called “Malocclusion”. Un-occlude teeth continue to grow and results in penetrating the skull or jaw and squirrels suffer from starvation and finally face death.
9. Due to chewing on hard surface squirrel teeth get shocked and after sometime hard bony mass may start to grow around root of tooth which hinders the growth of teeth, this is called odontoma. This bony mass never allows the squirrels to breath properly.
10. All teeth of squirrels grow in curved style.
11. Baton Rouge squirrels use to chatter their teeth for communication as warning signals when sense any danger around.
12. Squirrels use their teeth to sense hardness, texture or even temperature of the object.
13. They exert light pressure with their teeth to play chew bite as you can observe in pet squirrels. Or to chomp the nut they exert enough force with their teeth.
