South Bend Wildlife Tip: Should I feed South Bend squirrels for fun?
The short answer to this question is no. If you are in the park, some distance from your home, people think there is no harm in doing so. Squirrels are, after all, not that bad. However, these are still wild animals. They tend to form habits real easily, and start to associate people with food. What harm does it do? Well, to start with, you are not the only person using the park. Others go there as well. Your feeding of the squirrels made them bolder, they approach people easily now. This, in turn, makes them think people always have food, and it's always for them. What does that mean then? It means that picnickers are prone to be harassed by the South Bend squirrels, they raid picnic baskets. This is a big deal because they carry all sorts of diseases, most commonly rabies. This disease can be fatal. We look at the squirrel again: can it really be a dangerous killer?

Alright, that can be a bit of an exaggeration. But what about those people who aren't there for a picnic? The couple sitting on the bench over there, talking? Or that old lady over there, sitting to have a rest after her morning walk? How are they affected? The lady may be affected by failing health. A squirrel darts over her lap, he's used to humans. She gets caught unaware and has a fright. All of a sudden, this poor old lady has a heart attack! Not that cute and harmless now, are they? What about the couple? They may be in the middle of a big discussion, on the verge of divorce. A South Bend squirrel, emboldened by your feeding it, jumps onto the man's back. He gets up and walks away, relationship's over. What could have stopped all this? Not feeding the squirrels.
