The Villages Wildlife Tip: Mouse odor: causes and how to remove smell
A mouse is another type of small rodent, generally preferred over a rat (which may only be down to their stereotypical cuteness). The most common of mouse species is the well-known house mice. With supervision, they can make lovely pets, especially for small children, however wild The Villages mice also have the potential to become expensive pests.

Why do mice smell?
Mice like to socialise with each other and other animals, they tend to use their scent as a way of communication. The scent released can help them to make territory, identify other partners in their group and smell out female mice that are ready to reproduce. Whilst, this all sounds very clever, it's unfortunately not for humans and tends to leave a lingering unwanted smell.

How else do they cause smell in homes?
As they are tiny animals, they are able to get into tiny places, such as, behind fridges. This can help them to hide and escape, making it difficult for humans to catch them. Once they are hidden, they can breed and drop faeces which will all contribute to the odour.

How do I get rid of the smell?
Like any pest problem, in order to get rid of the smell, you need to get rid of the cause. Many traps are available on the market to get rid of The Villages mice, however, if they have started breeding, it may be easier to call in a professional.

Now they've gone, how do I get rid of the lingering odour?
Make sure that all The Villages rodents have gone (including any deceased ones, as these can cause the worst smells). Then wear protective clothing, replace any contaminated areas and soak the rest of the area down with disinfectant and vinegar to remove any lingering odour.
