Snakes are misunderstood creatures. Irrational fear has caused people to kill them on sight. Even the most venomous of snakes do not want to be in your house, yet they tend to get inside quite often. Why? Well, heat sources attract Gainesville snakes, and we give off heat. That, and rodents tend to hang around us a lot, and snakes love rodents as food. Let's see if we can save a few snake lives.
Outside the house
More often than not, Gainesville snakes will be around houses with construction going on. Here's what you can do to discourage them:
• Remove rubble piles
• Tidy your tool shed
• Add shade netting to your fences. From the ground upwards it should be about 1 meter high
Not an awful lot to do, right? Well, the reason for this is snakes don't have any repellents that are fool proof. Catching snakes should often be left for the professionals, as there are a ton of different types, some venomous and some not. If you are sure the serpent in question is not venomous, you can proceed with these steps
Catching snakes
Be aware that, even if the Gainesville snake is not venomous or dangerous (constrictor), your presence still agitates it quite a bit. Wear gloves!
• If the snake is small enough and placid enough, you may be able to scoop it up with your hands
• If this isn't the case, use a bucket and cardboard
• Place the bucket over the snake
• Slide the cardboard in under the bucket
• Take it some distance from any human settlement and release it into the wild
Always consult a professional snake catcher about the snake in question. Some snakes are immediately identifiable, such as the diamondback rattlesnake, Indian cobra, black mamba and puffadder. Also keep pets clear of any and all snakes at all times.
