Wilmington Wildlife Tip: Do rats bite humans in their sleep?
If you're anything like me, this would be one of my worst nightmares. I hate the idea of any insect or Wilmington rodent being about whilst I'm sleeping, never mind biting me whilst I am trying to sleep peacefully. So, is there any truth in this? It depends who you believe. There are many researches who have performed experiments with rats that would say that the possibility of them biting a human is myth. They would tell you that rats are simply, out and about looking for food, not with the intent to attack.

What about the real-life cases where rats have bit humans?
It can happen. Despite popular fear, Wilmington rats are not known as dangerous animals. They are nocturnal and will appear at night to find food to survive. However, they are drawn by their sense of smell. If they catch smell of a scent that attracts them, then there is the possibility that they could bite.

So, is there a certain smell that puts me at risk?
Those who work as a garbage collector, or those who work in kitchens can be slightly more at risk. These people are more likely to have a scent that attracts these Wilmington rats, they are used to eating out of garbage so if you smell like food then they could mistake you for being food.

Will they only bite me if I smell of food?
In rare cases, rats have bitten humans as a warning of “Get out of my way”. They can't speak to tell you that so, this has occasionally been known as their way of communicating. In no cases, would it be recommended that you sleep where rats are able to run freely due to their ability to carry disease. So, try and make sure you are clean and in a safe environment, if this is the case then you should be safe from rat attacks.
