Richmond Wildlife Tip: What are the common problems that pigeons or other birds cause?
Some birds can be seen as cute, especially those kept in zoos. A lot of children will still enjoy watching Richmond pigeons fly, even running up to them to see how close they can get. This shouldn't give off a false idea though. Pigeons are well known for being ridden with disease, like any bird they can occasionally give a sharp peck meaning they should be approached with caution.

Can where they nest cause problems?
Yes. If you look out of your window in the morning, chances are you will see Richmond Richmond pigeons perching on windowsills or on rooftops. They will often drop faeces on here which certainly isn't pleasant to look at. As well as this, pigeons can roost on TV aerials. Whilst this isn't life threatening, it can be very annoying for the home owner who then may struggle getting their tv to work.Pigeons can also nest in gutters and chimneys. Although, chimneys aren't in use as much nowadays, some are. They have the ability to break off bits of guttering or block chimneys which again, may cause problems for the home owner.

Do their food habits cause problems?
Similar to seagulls, Richmond pigeons will eat whatever they can get their beaks on. They will often congregate in a town centre and chase after dropped food, they will even attack at bin bags if left in the open. This can cause a lot of mess and if its outside your property, its certainly not nice to look at.

Can pigeons carry disease?
Like many other birds, they can. Pigeons can pass on salmonella which will give humans an upset stomach and symptoms of food-poisoning. If pigeon excrement is inhaled over a period of time, this can also cause respiratory issues for the human. All in all, not nice.

What other problems do they cause?
As they are greedy animals, pigeons can often drive out other species of birds that are searching for food in the same area. This can cause great bother to our natural ecosystem. About House Mouse: If living in a house they are not picky and will eat any scraps that are left behind. It could be crumbs from toast, pieces of food left down for house pets, or even any food thrown in the trash. If they can smell it they will nibble it. They do not need a lot of water since most things they nibble on have liquids in them that will hold the mouse over until it finds standing water. Behavior: A house mouse might be cute, but rest assure they can do more damage than you ever thought possible. They love chewing, so wires are not a challenge before they are gnawed through.
